Dwarf Hamsters Overview

Your One-Stop Dwarf Hamster Care Resource - Dwarf Russian Hamsters,
Robo Dwarf Hamsters, White Dwarf Hamsters and Dwarf Chinese Hamsters
Dwarf hamsters have become increasingly popular recently, and no
wonder. These pocket-sized pets are just as cuddly, furry, and fun to
watch as their slightly larger, Golden cousins, but even cuter because
they're so tiny. Many breeds of dwarf hamsters can be acclimated to
their owners through gentle but consistent handling, and can become
charming companions. And, because they live in relatively small cages,
they provide an opportunity for pet ownership for many people who do
not have room for, want, or are able to take care of, a larger pet.

Though they come in many different breeds, there are three main breeds
of dwarf hamster that you'll find in your pet store: Russian,
Roborovski and Chinese. The most common in North America is a type of
Russian called the Campbell's, though it is often confused with the
other Russian dwarf, the Winter White. Most dwarfs come in a grey-brown
color called "agouti" but some breeds come in albino (pure white with
red eyes), argente (sandy or peach, with ruby or black eyes), black
(dark brown or black) and opal (silver blue).

When choosing a dwarf hamster as a pet, try to shop in the late
afternoon and choose one that is alert, with clear eyes and a clean
coat, with no signs of illness. If there are other, clearly ill
hamsters in the cage with the one you want, do not buy it; this is a
sign your dwarf hamster may soon get sick as well.

Dwarf hamsters are small (anywhere from 2 to 3.5 inches), but they
should be kept in as large a cage as possible as they are extremely
active and need room to roam. Consider buying an aquarium, because
unless you get a wire cage meant for dwarfs, they may very well squeeze
between the bars and escape! Other than a cage, you really only need
hamster bedding, a water bottle, chew sticks and a food dish to start
off, though fairly soon you'll want a ball or another cage to put the
dwarf hamster in while cleaning the cage.

Dwarf hamsters are more social than their bigger, Syrian or Golden
cousins, and so should usually be bought in pairs (the exception are
Chinese dwarf hamsters, which can be aggressive with one another). Buy
same-sex pairs if you don't want to breed them. Dwarf hamsters cannot
be spayed or neutered!

Breeding most dwarf hamsters is really very easy; you only need a male
and a female that get along, and eventually you'll likely get babies.
Not only that, but as long as you leave the mama alone for the first
couple of weeks, the babies themselves are very easy to raise as well.
The hardest part about breeding dwarf hamsters is saying goodbye once
they've been weaned and you've found them new homes.

Tiny, friendly, affordable and easy to care for, dwarf hamsters make
the ideal pet for people who live in smaller spaces, or who rent and
cannot have a larger pet such as a cat or a dog. Just be sure you've
got two of the same sex when you take them home, or else you'll have to
find new homes for the babies... or room for more cages!

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.

ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
